Comfort Sands (February 26, 1748 – September 22, 1834) was a prominent American merchant, banker, and politician. During the American Revolutionary War, he served as a member of the New York Provincial Congress and was later appointed as the first New York State Auditor-General. Alongside his brother, Joshua, he engaged in foreign trade and land speculation, making significant investments in Brooklyn's waterfront area. In 1784, he co-founded the Bank of New York, the oldest bank in the United States, and held various political and commercial positions, including serving as the President of the New York Chamber of Commerce. Sands married twice and had 18 children, leaving a lasting legacy through his descendants, including noted poet Robert Charles Sands. He passed away in Hoboken, N.J. in 1834.
