Wentworth Arthur Matthew

Wentworth Arthur Matthew (June 23, 1892 – December 1973) was a West Indian immigrant who founded the Commandment Keepers of the Living God, a Black Hebrew congregation in 1919 in New York City. Influenced by Marcus Garvey's pan-Africanism and black nationalism, Matthew developed his congregation along Jewish lines of observance, believing that Black people were descendants of the ancient Israelites. He also established the Israelite Rabbinical Academy in Brooklyn, where he taught and ordained African-American rabbis. Despite his belief, Matthew's theory that Black people are descended from ancient Israelites is not widely accepted by the greater Jewish community. His teachings continue to be followed by many Black Hebrews and Black Hebrew Israelites, with rabbis ordained from the Israelite Rabbinical Academy becoming spiritual leaders of Black Hebrews in numerous cities. However, his controversial views led to his rejection by the New York Board of Rabbis and little connection between Black Jews and white congregations after his death in 1973.
