Yi Yungao

Yi Yungao, also known as Wan Ko Yee and His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III, was a Chinese-American artist and Buddhist religious leader. He claimed to be the third reincarnation of Dorje Chang (Vajradhara), a claim that was not universally accepted among Buddhists. Yi gained wealthy followers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and China before moving to the United States in 1999 and living in Pasadena, California. Known for his art, Yi's painting "Ink Lotus" was sold for $16.5 million at a public auction in 2015, attracting attention and puzzlement from art experts due to the sudden increase in the value of his works. Yi's artwork profits were reportedly donated to charity. He also received praise from certain United States politicians and was awarded the World Peace Prize. However, the Chinese government accused Yi of fraud, issuing a warrant for his arrest, which was later withdrawn. Despite the controversies surrounding him, Yi's influence extended to the establishment of the International Art Museum of America in San Francisco and the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Cultural and Art Museum in Covina, California.
