Discover the Global Legacy of the Adair Surname
The Adair surname traces its origins to Scotland, emerging as a significant name in the early 14th century. Contrary to popular belief, it is unrelated to names like Edgar or MacDaire. The surname is thought to have originated from Robert Fitzgerald De Athdare, who hailed from the area now known as Limerick, Ireland. The name 'Adare' is linked to a town near his family lands, eventually evolving into 'Adair' as it crossed into Scotland.
Robert Fitzgerald's journey from Ireland to Scotland marked the beginning of the Adair family's spread. After a fatal duel with a relative, Robert became a fugitive, adopting the surname 'Adare' in honor of his origins. His subsequent exploits in Scotland, notably the slaying of the outlaw Currie, further rooted the Adair name in Scottish history. Over time, the Adair family tree expanded across the British Isles, notably establishing branches in Northern Ireland during the 17th century.
