Mary Baines
Mary Jean Baines, OBE, was a pioneering British palliative care physician renowned for her transformative contributions to end-of-life care. Working alongside Dame Cicely Saunders, she helped establish the palliative care movement at St Christopher's Hospice in London from 1968 to 1997. Baines developed the UK's first community-based end-of-life care service, providing 24-hour home care for terminal patients, and trained many of the first specialist palliative care physicians in the UK. Her research, including co-authoring "Living With Dying: The Management of Terminal Disease," set standards in palliative care, influencing global practices. Honored with an OBE in 1991 and a European Women of Achievement Award in 2006, Baines was a globally recognized expert and adviser on palliative care.
Mary Baines was born in Wallington, Surrey, on 29 October 1932 to parents Mary (née Tripe) and John Silver. She married Ted Baines, an Anglican clergyman, in 1958, and they had three children together. Her early education included attending Croydon High School and Newnham College, Cambridge, before graduating from St Thomas's Hospital Medical School.
