Mary A. Clem, originally Mary A. McLaughlin, was a pioneering American mathematician and human computer, renowned for her work at Iowa State University. Born in 1905 in Nevada, Iowa, Clem made significant contributions to computing by inventing the “zero check” technique, which revolutionized error detection in computing algorithms. She played a crucial role in the Mathematics Statistical Service and later led the Computing Service of the Statistical Laboratory. Her career included pivotal assignments, such as working with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima and participating in the Allied Mission to Greece. Clem's work with punch cards and calculating machines notably advanced the field of statistical computing.

Brian L. Clem, born in 1972, is a notable American politician who served as a Democratic member of the Oregon House of Representatives for the 21st district from 2007 to 2021. His political career began with a significant victory in 2006 when he defeated incumbent Republican Billy Dalto. Clem's tenure in the House is marked by his dedication to public service, and he briefly entertained a gubernatorial run in 2010. However, he ultimately chose not to enter the race. In a poignant decision, Clem resigned from the legislature in late October 2021 to care for his mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.
