Trent Dabbs is an accomplished American singer-songwriter renowned for his significant contributions to the music landscape. James McBride Dabbs (1896–1970) was a prominent American author and farmer from South Carolina, known for his insightful writings on Southern culture and religion. As a leading liberal voice in the South, Dabbs was notably recognized by Martin Luther King Jr. for his eloquent discourse on African American struggles. His influential works, such as "The Southern Heritage," addressed civil rights and desegregation, and he served as president of the Southern Regional Council. Dabbs also contributed to academia as a professor of English at Coker College.

James McBride Dabbs was born near Mayesville, South Carolina, on his family's estate, Rip Raps Plantation. His parents were Eugene Whitefield Dabbs, a poor overseer, and Maude McBride, whose family were conservative planters and owned the plantation for generations. Dabbs' upbringing was shaped by the complex dynamics of his family's Southern heritage.

Mary Ellen Lawson Dabbs was a pioneering Texas physician, women's rights activist, and writer dedicated to women's suffrage and the temperance movement. As an officer in the Texas Equal Rights Association, she advocated for voting rights for African American women and played a significant role in founding the first women's suffrage society in Texas. Dabbs was also active in the Farmers' Alliance and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and contributed to the National Economist publication. Her medical career saw her become the eighth woman to practice medicine in Fort Worth, and she later contributed to establishing Texas Woman's University.

Born in Rusk County, Texas, Dabbs was the only girl among eight siblings, raised on a cotton plantation where she participated in activities typically reserved for men. Her marriage to Joseph Wilkes Dabbs was tumultuous, resulting in a life-threatening situation that led her to seek a divorce and custody of her daughters. She was a dedicated mother, raising his children from a previous marriage and bearing five children of her own.

Isaac Dabbs was a prominent American politician who played a significant role in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1875 to 1877. Born into slavery in Charlotte County, Virginia, Dabbs overcame his early life challenges to serve as a delegate for two years, representing the Radical Republicans. Despite being illiterate for much of his career, Dabbs was known for his dedication to the political causes he supported. He continued to be an active party member, contributing as a canvasser during the 1883 elections. Dabbs’ commitment to public service and his journey from slavery to political office make him a notable figure in African American history.
