Joseph Deane
Joseph Deane PC (1674–1715) was a distinguished Irish politician and judge, renowned for his tenure as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and Gray's Inn, Deane served in the Irish House of Commons for County Dublin from 1703 to 1714. His legal acumen and integrity earned him the trust of influential figures like Archbishop William King, leading to his appointment as a Privy Councillor and his eventual rise to Chief Baron under King George I. Tragically, Deane's promising career was cut short by his untimely death in May 1715, reportedly from a chill caught during a solar eclipse.
Joseph Deane was born in Crumlin, Dublin, into a prominent family with deep ties to Irish and English history. His father, Joseph Deane of Deanehill, County Meath, and mother, Elizabeth Parker, daughter of John Parker, Archbishop of Dublin, provided a strong lineage. His grandfather, Major Joseph Deane, was closely associated with Oliver Cromwell, securing extensive land grants for his services. Although his brother Edward inherited most of the family estates, Joseph retained the Crumlin estate and sold a manor in Old Leighlin, County Carlow. His marriage to Margaret Boyle connected him further to aristocratic circles, with their daughters marrying into noble families.
