Erinea Garcia Gallegos
Erinea Garcia Gallegos (1903–2002) was a pioneering American educator and postmistress from Conejos, Colorado. Known for her service as the postmistress of San Luis for nearly four decades, Garcia Gallegos was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935. She played a vital role during World War II, assisting locals with letter writing and translations. Her contributions to her community and her groundbreaking work led to her posthumous induction into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2012. Her legacy continues through the Erinea and Maclovio Gallegos Scholarship Fund at Adams State University.
Erinea Garcia Gallegos was born to José Amarante García, a prominent Conejos County figure who served as sheriff and judge. Tony Gallegos (1924–2018) was a distinguished American businessman and politician with Mexican American and Native American heritage. He served as a flight engineer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying 17 missions in a B-17 bomber. Post-war, Gallegos graduated from the Bistram Institute of Fine Arts and worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company, where he rose to corporate art director. He was appointed by President Reagan as a Commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), serving multiple terms and becoming the first Hispanic Acting Chairman of the EEOC under President Clinton.
