Rhys ap Gruffydd, also known as The Lord Rhys, was a prominent Welsh ruler of Deheubarth from 1155 to 1197. Renowned for his strategic prowess, he successfully reclaimed and expanded his territories amidst conflicts with Norman forces and English kings, like Henry II and Richard I. Known for his titles "Proprietary Prince of Deheubarth" and "Prince of South Wales," he was instrumental in Welsh resistance and unity. Rhys was born into a lineage of Welsh nobility; his father, Gruffydd ap Rhys, ruled part of Deheubarth, and his mother, Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, was the daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd. His grandfather, Rhys ap Tewdwr, had been the king of Deheubarth until his demise in 1093. The family's turbulent history included battles against Norman invaders, shaping Rhys's early life and later endeavors as a leader.

Sir Rhys ap Gruffydd, also known as Rhys Griffith or Rhys Hen, was a prominent 14th-century Welsh nobleman, renowned for his wealth and influential role in supporting English kings during their settlement in Wales. Notably, he served as sheriff of Carmarthen and deputy to the royal justice in South Wales. His military career included commanding troops against Scotland and Welsh rebels, and he played a significant role in the Battle of Crecy in 1346, where he was knighted. Rhys was closely associated with the Despensers and later supported King Edward III, amassing substantial landholdings.

Rhys ap Gruffydd was the son of Gruffydd ap Hywel and Nest, with familial connections to notable figures like the poet Dafydd ap Gwilym. He was a great-great-grandson of Ednyfed Fychan, a 13th-century nobleman. His marriage to Joan de Somerville further extended his influence, as she was coheiress to properties across six English counties. Their lineage continued through their sons, with the English and Welsh estates divided between them, establishing the Griffiths of Wychnor.
