Billings Learned Hand was a renowned American jurist and judicial philosopher, serving as a federal trial judge and later as an appellate judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1924 to 1961. Learned Hand was born into a distinguished legal family in Albany, New York, in 1872. His father, Samuel Hand, was a prominent appellate lawyer, while his mother, Lydia Learned Hand, came from a family with a tradition of using surnames as given names. The Hand family was deeply rooted in the Democratic Party and known for their legal expertise. After the death of his father, Samuel, when Learned was 14, his mother played a significant role in shaping his values, emphasizing duty and intellectual achievement.

Anthony Hand MBE, born 15 August 1967 in Edinburgh, is a celebrated Scottish former ice hockey player and coach. He made history as the first British player drafted by an NHL team, the Edmonton Oilers, in 1986. Hand, nicknamed "Two point Tony," amassed over 4000 points in his career, setting national records. He had a long-standing involvement with the Great Britain national team as head coach and led the Manchester Phoenix before the franchise folded in 2017. Hand was honored with the Torriani Award and inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2017, marking his exceptional contributions to ice hockey.

Born to David and Lorraine Hand, Tony Hand grew up in Edinburgh’s Muirhouse area. He attended St Augustine's Catholic School and began his ice hockey career with the Murrayfield Racers. His older brother, Paul Hand, also pursued a career in ice hockey, reflecting a family passion for the sport.
