Famous People with Higgs (and Their Family Tree)
Peter Higgs
Peter Ware Higgs (1929–2024) was a renowned British theoretical physicist, celebrated for his groundbreaking work on the mass of subatomic particles. As a professor at the University of Edinburgh, Higgs developed the pivotal Higgs mechanism, which explained how particles acquire mass through the Higgs field, and predicted the Higgs boson's existence. This discovery became a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics. His 1964 paper in Physical Review Letters revolutionized electroweak theory, leading to the Higgs boson's discovery at CERN in 2012. For these achievements, Higgs received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, sharing it with François Englert.
Peter Higgs was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, to Thomas Ware Higgs, a BBC sound engineer, and Gertrude Maude née Coghill. Due to his father's career and health challenges, Higgs was partly home-schooled and spent much of his childhood in Bristol with his mother. His early education at Cotham Grammar School was influenced by alumnus Paul Dirac, a pioneer in quantum mechanics. This foundation set the stage for Higgs's illustrious academic and scientific career.
Mary Higgs
Mary Ann Higgs OBE, born Mary Ann Kingsland, was a pioneering British writer and social reformer known for her influential work in Oldham and advocacy for homeless women. Born in 1854, Higgs notably contributed to the development of Oldham's Garden Suburb and the modern translation of the Twentieth Century New Testament. Her investigative work, including the publication of "Where Shall She Live?" co-authored with Edward Heyward, raised awareness about the housing challenges faced by women. Higgs was also instrumental in founding the National Association of Women's Lodging Houses and the Beautiful Oldham Society, marking her as a key figure in social reform.
Mary Ann Higgs was born in Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1854 to Caroline (née Paddon) and William Kingsland, a Congregational church minister. She was the eldest of three children. Her father's ministerial duties took the family to Bradford in 1862, where he led the College Congregational Chapel through expansion. Higgs's educational journey began at the College for Women in Hitchin, later becoming a founding student of Girton College, Cambridge, where she was a trailblazer for women in academia.
