Henry Martyn (1781-1812) was a distinguished Anglican priest and missionary renowned for his pioneering work in India and Persia. He served as a chaplain for the British East India Company, translating the New Testament into Urdu, Persian, and Judaeo-Persic, and the Psalms into Persian. His dedication extended to translating the Book of Common Prayer into Urdu. Despite facing health challenges and cultural barriers, Martyn's linguistic contributions and religious fervor left a significant impact on missionary work. His courage and devotion are commemorated in parts of the Anglican Communion with a Lesser Festival on October 19.

Henry Martyn was born in Truro, Cornwall, in 1781. His father, John Martyn, worked as a "captain" or mine-agent at Gwennap. Educated at Truro Grammar School and St John's College, Cambridge, Martyn excelled academically, achieving the title of senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman in 1801.

Edward Martyn (1859–1923) was a prominent Irish playwright and early republican political and cultural activist, best known as the first president of Sinn Féin from 1905 to 1908. He was instrumental in founding the Irish Literary Theatre alongside William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory, significantly contributing to the establishment of the Abbey Theatre. Martyn was a dedicated patron of the arts, supporting Irish culture through initiatives like the Palestrina Choir and the Feis Ceoil. His strong republican ideals were evident in his outspoken opposition to British rule in Ireland and his close associations with notable figures such as Arthur Griffith and Maud Gonne.

Edward Martyn hailed from a notable lineage, being the elder son of John Martyn of Tullira Castle, Ardrahan, and Annie Mary Josephine Smyth of Masonbrook, County Galway. He succeeded his father in 1860, having been educated at prestigious institutions such as Belvedere College, Dublin, and Wimbledon College, London. Martyn's ancestors included Richard Óge Martyn, a leading Irish Confederate, and Oliver Óge Martyn, a Jacobite warrior. Despite these historical ties, the family were unionists by his lifetime, although Martyn himself became a fervent Irish republican.

Thomas Óge Martyn was a prominent figure in Galway, serving as Mayor during the terms 1549–1550 and 1562–1563. Known for his contributions to the town's infrastructure, he secured a grant from Queen Mary in 1558 to construct a mill and a fortified stone bridge on the Corrib river, completed in 1562. A member of the influential Martyn family, one of the Tribes of Galway, his legacy includes significant developments in the town's commercial landscape, marking an era of growth and prosperity.

Thomas Óge Martyn was the son of Wylliam Martin, a former Mayor of Galway. His lineage includes notable descendants such as William Óge Martyn and Francis Martin, both later Mayors of Galway, and Richard "Humanity Dick" Martin. The Martyn family remains an integral part of Galway's rich history.

David Forbes Martyn FAA FRS was a distinguished Scottish-born Australian physicist renowned for his contributions to radio research and the development of coastal and air defense RADAR during World War II. Notably, he was awarded the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal and the T. K. Sidey Medal in 1947 for his groundbreaking discovery of atmospheric tides. Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1950, Martyn played a pivotal role in establishing the Australian Academy of Science in 1954, later serving as its president. His work in radiographic studies of the upper atmosphere and the sun, along with his influential lectures, firmly established his legacy in the scientific community.

David Martyn was born in Cambuslang, Scotland, to Harry Somerville Martyn, an ophthalmic surgeon, and Elizabeth Craig Allan, née Thom. He was an avid trout fisherman, reflecting his interest in environmental matters. In 1944, he married Margot Adams from Sydney, but the couple did not have children. Martyn passed away in Camden, New South Wales, in 1970.
