Offa of Mercia, born circa 730 and deceased on July 29, 796 AD, was a formidable King of Mercia from 757 to 796. Known for his strategic alliances and military prowess, Offa extended Mercian supremacy over most of southern England. His reign was marked by alliances such as that with Beorhtric of Wessex and the control of Kent and Sussex. A Christian king, Offa clashed with the Church, creating the archdiocese of Lichfield, and commissioned coins featuring himself and his wife, Cynethryth. Offa's legacy includes Offa's Dyke, a testament to his organizational capabilities, and his reign is frequently discussed among historians for its significance in early medieval Britain.

Offa was the son of Thingfrith and a descendant of Eowa. He came to power following the assassination of Æthelbald, after defeating the rival claimant Beornred in a civil war. His legacy continued briefly through his son Ecgfrith, who succeeded him but reigned for less than five months.

Penda of Mercia, a prominent 7th-century Anglo-Saxon king, played a crucial role in shaping the Mercian Supremacy. Known for his pagan beliefs, Penda became king in 626 and expanded his influence by conquering the Severn Valley. He is renowned for his victories over Northumbrian kings Edwin and Oswald, notably at the Battles of Hatfield Chase and Maserfield. Penda's military prowess extended to defeating the East Angles and exiling Cenwalh of Wessex. Despite his successes, Penda faced a crushing defeat and death at the Battle of the Winwaed in 655 against Oswiu of Northumbria.

Penda was a son of Pybba of Mercia, belonging to the Icling dynasty, with reputed lineage tracing back to the legendary figure Wōden. His family included a brother, Eowa, and possibly Coenwalh, although historical records suggest some ambiguity regarding their exact relations. Pybba reportedly had 12 sons, though many claims of descent might be later inventions.

Leofric, Earl of Mercia, was a prominent figure in 11th-century England, known for his significant influence under King Cnut and his successors. As a powerful earl, he founded monasteries in Coventry and Much Wenlock and played a crucial role during the succession crisis following King Cnut's death. His efforts to support Harold Harefoot against Harthacnut and his involvement in the conflict at Gloucester in 1051 highlight his political acumen. Leofric's legacy includes his remarkable contributions to religious institutions alongside his wife, Lady Godiva, whose legendary ride has become a part of English folklore.

Leofric was the son of Leofwine, Ealdorman of the Hwicce, and had three brothers: Northman, Edwin, and Godwine. His family origins link him to influential positions within the aristocracy of his time. Northman's death on Cnut's orders and Edwin's death in battle against Gruffydd ap Llywelyn mark significant events in his family's history. Leofric's son, Ælfgar, succeeded him as Earl, continuing the family's prominence in English noble circles.

The Kingdom of Mercia, established in the English Midlands from the 6th to the 10th century, was a dominant force in the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. For two hundred years from the mid-7th century, Mercian rulers held significant power, with titles such as King of Britain and King of the English, asserting their supremacy. These monarchs, primarily from the Iclingas dynasty, played crucial roles in shaping early English history. The kingdom's influence waned after its annexation, marking the transition from royal rule to ealdormen and earls, with the latter evolving into hereditary titles.

The Mercian monarchy initially stemmed from the Iclingas, descendants of the kings of the Angles. After the Iclingas' male line extinction, various families labeled B, C, and W vied for leadership, reflecting the dynamic and competitive nature of Mercian succession.
