The Kingdom of Navarre, originally known as the Kingdom of Pamplona, was a significant medieval state located on both sides of the western Pyrenees, between present-day Spain and France. Established around Pamplona during the Iberian Reconquista, it emerged from conflicts between the Carolingian Empire and the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. Navarre experienced territorial reductions and periods of rule by Aragon and France, eventually being annexed by the Crown of Castile in the 16th century and later merged with France. The Spanish conquest of Iberian Navarre was a pivotal military campaign led by Ferdinand II of Aragon and completed by Charles V from 1512 to 1524. Key events included Ferdinand exploiting Navarre's neutrality amid the Holy League against France, leading to its conquest while France was preoccupied. Subsequent Franco-Navarrese attempts to reclaim Navarre were thwarted, culminating in the Treaty of Cambrai in 1529, which divided Navarre along the Pyrenees. Upper Navarre was annexed by Castile, while Lower Navarre remained independent until it joined France in 1620.

Blanche I of Navarre, also known as Blanca de Navarra, was a prominent medieval queen, reigning as Queen of Navarre from 1425 until her death in 1441. She previously served as Queen of Sicily from 1402 to 1409 through her marriage to King Martin I of Sicily. Renowned for her leadership, Blanche acted as regent of Sicily during two periods of her husband's absence, gaining popularity for her support of Sicilian independence. Her marriage to John II of Aragon further solidified her royal status, with the couple being crowned together in 1429 as rulers of Navarre.

Blanche was the daughter of King Charles III of Navarre and Infanta Eleanor of Castile, making her a key figure in the lineage of Navarrese royalty. She became the heiress to the Navarre throne following the death of her elder sister, Joan, in 1413, and successfully ascended to power after her father's death in 1425. Her family ties extended into the Aragonese royal line through her marriage to John II, son of Ferdinand I of Aragon and Eleanor of Alburquerque.

Catherine of Navarre (1468–1517) was a prominent historical figure who served as Queen of Navarre from 1483 until her death. She held various titles including Duchess of Gandia and Countess of Foix. Her reign was marked by a civil war ignited by her uncle's claim to the throne, relying on the Salic Law. Catherine's strategic marriage to John of Albret helped consolidate her position, though it didn't completely quell political tensions. Despite challenges, she demonstrated courage and prudence, playing an active role in governance alongside her husband. Her reign saw the Castilian-Aragonese invasion of 1512, leading to the partial conquest of Navarre.

Catherine was the younger daughter of Gaston of Foix, Prince of Viana, and Magdalena of Valois, sister to Louis XI of France. She was born during the reign of her great-grandfather, King John II, and was closely connected to European royal lineages. Her brother Francis Phoebus initially inherited the crown of Navarre but died shortly after, leading to Catherine's ascension to the throne. Her family ties, particularly through her mother, positioned her within the complex web of European political alliances.
