Wesley Ruggles
Wesley Ruggles, born on June 11, 1889, in Los Angeles, California, was a distinguished American film director known for his versatile career in Hollywood. Starting as an actor in 1915, Ruggles appeared in several silent films before transitioning to directing in 1917. His most acclaimed work, Cimarron (1931), an adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel, was the first Western to win an Oscar for Best Picture. Wesley Ruggles was the younger brother of actor Charlie Ruggles. He passed away on January 8, 1972, in Santa Monica, California, and is interred near his brother at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
David Ruggles
David Ruggles (1810–1849) was a pioneering African-American abolitionist and activist in New York who played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, aiding over 600 fugitive slaves, including Frederick Douglass, to freedom. Known as a prototype for black activist journalists, Ruggles founded the first African-American-owned bookstore in the U.S. in 1834.
