Royal Sprague
Royal Tyler Sprague was a prominent legal figure, serving as the 11th Chief Justice of California. Born on January 23, 1814, Sprague's career began in education, teaching in Potsdam, New York, and later opening a school in Zanesville, Ohio. He transitioned to law, admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1838. The Gold Rush brought him to California in 1849, where he eventually became a State Senator and President pro tempore. Elected to the Supreme Court of California in 1867, Sprague was appointed Chief Justice in January 1872, a role he held until his death in February 1872.
