Marcus B. Toney

Marcus B. Toney (c. 1840 - 1929) was a notable American Confederate veteran, Masonic leader, and author. He worked for the Tennessee Central Railroad for fifty years and was the founding president of the Home for Aged Masons in Nashville. Toney served under generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War and was later captured and imprisoned at Elmira. After the war, he joined the Ku Klux Klan led by Nathan Bedford Forrest. He authored "The Privations of a Private," a memoir reflecting on his wartime experiences and the Lost Cause ideology, re-published in 2006 by the University of Alabama Press, earning the General Basil W. Duke Award.

Marcus B. Toney was born around 1840 in Buckingham County, Virginia. His father worked as a millwright and had plans to settle in St. Louis, but due to his mother's illness, the family remained in Nashville, Tennessee, where she passed away when Toney was six.
