James Walker Tufts (1835–1902) was a renowned American entrepreneur and philanthropist, celebrated for founding Pinehurst, North Carolina, and his significant contributions to the business of silver plate tableware. He established the Arctic Soda Fountain Co. and played a pivotal role in the merger that created the American Soda Fountain Co., serving as its first president. A visionary, Tufts transformed Pinehurst into a health resort and later, a golf destination with courses designed by Donald Ross.

James Walker Tufts was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, to Leonard Tufts and Hepzebah Fosdick Tufts. His legacy continued through his descendants, with his son Leonard and grandson Richard taking over the management of Pinehurst until 1970.

Peter Tufts, Sr. (1617 – 1700) was a key figure in the early development of Malden and Medford, Massachusetts. Notably, he built the historic Peter Tufts House, one of the oldest brick houses in the U.S., and was the first representative from Medford to the Massachusetts General Court in 1689. An immigrant from Wilby, Norfolk, England, Tufts became a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and served as a ferryman on the Mystic River.
