Record Source: living at the Post Office, Byers Green and employed as a Telegraphist and Sorting Clerk at Bishop Auckland Post Office, she was charged with two offences under the Stamp Duty Management Act, by affixing used 9d. stamps to postal packets at Bishop Auckland Post Office, to which she pleaded "Guilty". She was bound over for 12 months in the sum of £10 and ordered to pay £6-6s-0d. costs. It was alleged that on the first occasion it was discovered that a used stamp had been fixed to a parcel. An official from the postal headquarters in London then visited Bishop Auckland and made up a test packet, which was posted at the Post Office. GOUNDRY took the money but made no attempt to stamp the parcel. Later that day it was noticed that the stamp on the parcel was wet, and the stamp was marked showing that it had been used previously. The official questioned the defendant who replied that she knew the stamp had been used before. It was alleged that she had "affixed two used 9d. stamps to two postal packets . . . . she replied "I knew the stamp had been used before . . . . I was doing outward parcel sorting. I did not see a parcel without a stamp, it might have come off an inward parcel. I never keep a supply of used stamps". Her Solicitor said that her stamps balanced to within 8d. and that there was no suggestion of fraudulent conduct over a long period. She had had two or three shortages in her cash, and instead of telling her father, she had tried to make up the deficiencies herself. She had an excellent character and a good home, and had gained no personal direct benefit from her conduct. At the time her wage was £2-15s-0d. a week.
