Record Source: living at Mount Pleasant, Tudhoe "he fell into a staple shaft, 20 fathoms deep, which connects the Tudhoe Hutton Seam with the Busty. It is said he opened the gates and walked into the shaft. He did not fall far before he struck a bunting, to which he clung until his cries brought assistance. The drop cage was lowered and he was soon placed in safety, but was found to have a leg broken and was otherwise seriously injured".
