    Record Source: he was living in Allendale, Northumberland and with several others was "taken by Wm. ERRINGTON, papist Justice & other papists, and by them Carried to Hexham, and put in a Stinking Dungeon, and by the Gaoler there kept several dayes, who would scarce suffere anything to come to them; but walled up the window where severall of them were kept severel weeks, and then Carried to Morpeth Gaole, and there Continued Prisoners till the King's proclamation. They were taken at a meeting at New Shele, being there met together to Worship God, and Committed to Gaol for no other cause. All cleared at Quarter Sessions." It is not quite clear which proclamation of the King's is alluded to above, as he made two, ostensibly in favour of the Protestant Dissenters, but it is probably that of December, 1662, which was not sanctioned by Parliament.

    Record Source: he was living in Huntwell; "he and three others "in scorn called Quakers, were commit to prison ye 1st day of ye third month, 1694, and soe continued prisoners about a year and six months, till freed at the assizes, upon pleading the statute called the Act of Grace after the death of Queen Mary." "The Gaoler was moderate, and gave them liberty sometimes to go home and there abide until he sent for them, which made their imprisonment pretty easie." His inventory shows him possessed of the following: "His horse purse & apperral £10-0s-0d., the household goods £10-0s-0d., Four kine & three hiefers £14-0s-0d., A kow & a hiefer £3-0s-0d., Four Mares £8-0s-0d., 68 English sheep £15-0s-0d., 34 hogs £6-0s-0d., 66 Scots sheep £13-4s-0d., The husbandry geer £1-10s-0d., The hay £6-0s-0d. The Apprizal amounts to: £86-14s-0d". He was owed £16-13s- 6d, but had debts of £227-13s-9d. After deduction of funeral expenses of £7-5s- 0d. his estate was £131-11s-0d. in the red.
