[3] She was probably named after Caroline, the wife of King George IV, who had acceded to the throne on 29 January 1820 - at the time the King was trying to divorce her in favour of a woman he had secretly married Before Caroline. She was immensely popular and almost one million people signed petitions in her cause.

A copyhold house at Byers Green, then occupied by his mother Elizabeth LAYTON, was left to her for the rest of her life, then it was to go to Caroline Jane, her heirs and assigns.
