Record Source: as Captain of the smack "Thos. Stratton" he was involved in the rescue of 24 men from the SS. "Emma Ash", of about 2,000 tons. The smack was lying-to off the Dogger Bank in a heavy gale when she came in view of two steamers, one towing the other. The "Emma Ash" was settling down, as she had nine feet of water in her hold, and her boiler fires had been put out. The tow-ship abandoned her as she was sinking, leaving the rescue to the "Thos. Stratton". Capt. GOUNDRY and his mate launched a boat and rowed to the sinking steamer, where they rescued eight of the crew. With another crew member he made a second trip, rescuing a further eight men, including two from a lifeboat which had capsized. The remainder of the seamen launched a second lifeboat and managed to reach the smack

Event Date: 1 OCT 1873
Record Source: he was Captain of the steamer "Whittington", which was en-route from Amble to Ghent with a cargo of 382 tons of coal. At 6.30 pm. it grounded on the Middle Cross Sands, (off Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and consisting of sandbanks of continually changing depths of only a few metres). The Captain immediately ordered the engines to stop and go full speed astern but the vessel did not come off. He fired off distress signals until they had all been used. The Captain commenced discharging cargo from the after hold until she began to make water, when he set the pumps to work. He also pumped the water from the hold, but it gained upon them, and eventually put the fires out, it was than about 1 am. He then ordered the boats to be got out, and at 2.15 am. the Captain and crew left their vessel and proceeded to the Cockle Lightship, which they reached at 7.30 am. A passing steamer towed their boat abreast of Yarmouth, where they went to the Sailor's Home. The Captain went out to his vessel that afternoon and found her full of water, the seas breaking over her, and the fore part as far as the bridge was under water. The "Whittington" was an iron steamer of 191 tons, and had been built on the Tyne only the previous year

Event Date: 21 NOV 1873
Record Source: the Board of Trade Inquiry was opened into the sinking of the "Whittington" on Middle Rock Sand. Mr. HUMBLE, one of the owners of the vessel said that the Captain had been two years in their service and during that time there had never been any accident to the ship. They had always found him a steady, active, and sober man - so much so, that they resolved to appoint him to a larger vessel on the last voyage, and if the ship had not met with the accident the Captain would have found a letter to that effect awaiting him at Antwerp. . . . . . . . The Court adjourned

Event Date: 22 NOV 1873
Record Source: the Court decided that they "are of opinion that it was a grave error in judgement on the part of the master in assuming that there had been any alteration in the deviation of his compasses since they were adjusted before the previous voyage, which does appear to have existed : and had he not negligently omitted to use his lead, more particularly as the weather was very hazy, he would have had ample warning that he was running his ship into danger, as he must have passed over a part of the sand on which there was from 6 to 7 fathoms of water. The Court therefore, suspends the certificate of Edward Whitfield GOUNDRY for six calendar months from this date." The Court would recommend the Board of Trade to grant Mr. GOUNDRY a certificate as mate at the end of three months.

Record Source: he was Captain of the screw-steamer "Driffield" of Stockton. At 5.30 pm., 300 miles west of the Lizard he "sighted a brig showing distress signals. He bore down to her, and launched the lifeboat and pulled off to her, but was unable to get alongside owing to the heavy north-west sea running. However they managed to get off all the crew, consisting of seven seamen and the master. No attempt was made to tow the brig, as she had settled so low in the water. No doubt if the crew had not been taken off when they were they would have gone down with the ship before morning. They report having been pumping night and day for several days, and the leak gaining on them all the time. The name of the brig was "Eos", of Christiana, 13 days out from Ayr, bound to Demerara, coal-laden. The crew were transferred to a tug on the 13th inst., and landed at Falmouth"
