Record Source: Type: Obituary Ellen May Merritt nee Brown was born in 1893, near Kaniva, Victoria, where her parents were farming. She was one of eleven children and her father died when she was eight years old. Ellen May's mother remained on the farm with the assistance of her older sons.
When Ellen May left school, she carried out domestic duties on one of the neighbouring farms, being allowed one half day off per month and was paid 12 shillings and sixpence per week.
In 1912, she married Allan Merritt And Had Four Children, Two Sons Having Predeceased Her. While she was pregnant with her second baby, she contracted polio, which resulted in her right arm being paralysed. Because of her spirit, she overcame her disability and worked with her husband on wheat growing properties, first near Kaniva, Victoria and then at Pata, South Australia.
The disastrous droughts of the late 1920's, and the continued deterioration of her husband's health, as a result of war service, forced them to virttually walk off their land. In an attempt to retrieve their position, they moved to a farm at Peake. Because of her husband's poor health and difficulties experienced clearing virgin scrub and working the land at that time, they once again left and moved back to Kaniva and later to Miram.
In late 1938, they moved to Adelaide and in 1944 her husband, after a long illness, died as a result of being gasses during World War 1.
Ellen May's lefe coincided with the great social changes that have occurred over the past one hundred years. In her early life, the horse was the only mode of transport and she has lived through two world wars, the great depression and has see a man landed on the moon. She was one of the true pioneers of this country.
Ellen May, who was a widow for 43 years, was a very courageous lady and, whatever the circumstances of her life, never complained and was always ready and willing to be of assistance and helped others on many occasions
Her family was always her greatest concern and, in later years, she was very proud of the fact that she had sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
We are sure her greatest wish would be that the coming generations carry on her example of courage in the face of adversity.
