Record Source: at Houghton-le-Spring Magistrates' Court, he was bound over in the sum of 40s.(£2) for 12 months for causing grievous bodily harm to his fifteen-year-old daughter, Irene, at the family home at Middle Row, Sunniside, Houghton-le-Spring. The daughter, against her father's orders, had returned home late from a visit to Hetton Carnival whereupon he thrashed her with a belt. She ran upstairs and fastened herself in her bedroom, then jumped from the window to escape from her father and went to a neighbour's house. A doctor later examined her and found "a painful swelling above the left wrist. Both sides of her face were swollen and there was a bruise about eight inches long between her shoulder blades". GOUNDRY said that he had had "a lot of trouble with his daughter since she left school. She had been sent home from two situations because of her late hours. He thought that a thrashing was better than the disgrace she might encounter". GOUNDRY was aged 39 and the family was living at Middle Row, Sunniside, Houghton-le-Spring
