[2] This is a rewrite of what was written in the Book of Paris, TN and Henry Co.:
Dr. F. F. Porter - is the eldest son of Col. Nathaniel Porter, who was a distinguished citizen of Henry County and among its earliest settlers. His mother was Evelina Hagler, whom was the daughter of Maj. John Hagler, one of the earliest settlers of Henry Co.
Dr. Porter was born on March 22, 1838, on the waters of LIttle Sandy, ten miles east of Paris. He had attended schools from the neighborhood until he was about 12 years old, at which time he was sent to the Paris Male Academy. At 16 years of age he was placed in the mercantile house of J.W. and H.T. Blanton to learn the mercantile business. While working at the Blantons, medical books that belonged to Dr. Blanton fell into his hands, and it became apparent that medicine was what he was interested in. Dr. Blanton advised Felix's dad and Felix was then sent to the Cumberland University, at Lebanon, TN, to complete his education. He graduated from the medical department of the Universtiy of Pennsylvania in March, 1859. He then started to practice medicine in Manlyville for one year, when he married Miss Hattie Loving, Daughter Of Dr. S. Loving, of Henry County. They then moved to Paris, where Dr. Porter continued to practice medicine untile the Civil War started. He joined the Fifth TN Regiment, was commissioned assistant surgeon. After the war, because of poverty of the country and the hostility of the Brownlow Legislature to all professional men who had been in the Confederate Army, he accepted the management of a milling and ginning company. After a time he returned to medicine. His first wife died in 1864 and in 1867 he married Miss Willie Burgess Of Lebanon, Tn. He had 2 children by his first wife and six by his second.
In politics, Dr. Porter is a Jacksonian Democrat and taking an active part in the affairs of the country. He served as chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of Henry County for twelve consecutive years. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and has been for a number of years the superintendent of its Sunday School.
