[2] a newspaper article reported that the ROBSON family were trying to dispose of the Royal Oak Inn and a farm attached to it, due to the necessity of winding-up the estate of the previous licencee, Mrs. ROBSON. It was stated that the family had come from Scotland two centuries earlier, and that four generations of the ROBSON family had been "mine hosts" ever since, the last being Francis Newby ROBSON, who took over after his mother died in March 1936. She had taken over when her husband had died almost 40 years previously. In turn he had followed his father and grandfather. It was said that the Inn was sited on an old coaching road, and was reputedly 500 years old. It had once had a sign showing Prince Charles hiding in a tree, giving rise to a local belief that he had visited the Inn. The article said that the Inn used to be known for its fine pieces of antique carved oak furniture, but only one cabinet remained, together with some pewter and a bone about 16 feet long, which appeared to be from a prehistoric monster. Many American tourists were said to have admired a magnificent carved cabinet and two chairs, reputed to have been in the ROBSON family since 1346. They were later sold for £500 and sold on again for £2,000 to an American buyer.
