Record Source: he appeared at Hartlepool Police Court as witness to the theft of two pairs of trousers from the shop of Mr Jacob LEVY in Northgate Street, Hartlepool, where GOUNDRY was the Manager. Two Labourers, Wm. DIXON and John Thompson McCANN, had gone into the shop with a third man, who bought a shirt and then left the shop. DIXON lifted a pair of trousers and put them behind his back but seeing GOUNDRY looking at him he dropped them on the floor. McCANN then asked for a shirt and the shop assistant showed him one which he held out at the door. McCANN then returned to the counter saying "I won't have one now. There are too many about". After the prisoners had left the shop GOUNDRY noticed that a pair of trousers was missing - the Prosecutor asked him if he meant to insinuate that McCANN had held the shirt up to screen DIXON while he took the trousers, to which GOUNDRY agreed. GOUNDRY then sent the assistant after the accused, and he returned with two pairs of trousers. He said he had followed them and saw that DIXON had something under his coat, and told him to give up the trousers, which he did. The trousers were later handed to Detective A. PEART who said he arrested the prisoners in Whiteside's lodging-house. On being charged DIXON said he knew nothing about the trousers and McCANN said he was not guilty. - McCANN pleaded that he was never in company with DIXON, and did not know him, and called on Samuel HUNTER to corroborate - however his evidence proved that the men had all entered the shop together. DIXON, who had been convicted several times previously, was sentenced to three months' hard labour, and was told that if he appeared in the Court again he would be sent to the Assizes. McCANN was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour
