Genealogy Event 9
Event Type: Custom Event
Event Date: AUG 1883
Record Source: at Durham County Police Court, with five other Miners who worked at Tudhoe Colliery, he was charged with "a breach of the Employers' and Workmen's Act, in having absented themselves from work on the 3rd inst. without giving proper notice". They had been working during the afternoon at the time another Miner was killed in an accident in a different part of the colliery. The management and the workers had an agreement that in the case of a fatal accident the men could stop work for the day to show their sympathy. GOUNDRY and the others had only found out about the accident after they had finished their shift, so they took the next day off work. The colliery owners claimed this action had cost them £120. The Chairman of the Magistrates said that the men had broken the rules and that the Magistrates were therefore bound to make an order. The management agreed to drop the charges against five of the men and make a token order against only one man, who was duly ordered to pay the 5s. claim, plus costs, and the other cases were dismissed, the men excused the payment of costs.
