    Record Source: five Miners, including George GOUNDRY appeared at the Police Office, Old Elvet, charged with cutting and wounding Joseph RULE, a fellow Miner, at Aykley Heads. The injured man was still too ill to appear against the defendants, and still "lies in a precarious condition" and the men were remanded in custody

    Record Source: the four other Pitmen were charged with "feloniously wounding Joseph ROWELL at Aykley Heads, and with assaulting and beating Granger SIMPSON at the same time". It was alleged that the two victims were proceeding home "when they met the five prisoners, two of whom were in the uniform of the 2nd Durham Artillery Volunteers. After passing the time of night, ROWELL received a blow to the head, and was knocked down. SIMPSON was also struck, but he succeeded in getting away from his assailants. ROWELL whilst upon the ground was kicked and very brutally ill-treated, so much so that he is still under the treatment of Dr. CLARK - for the assault on ROWELL the prisoners were sentenced to two months' hard labour, and to pay the costs, or one month further, with the exception of DODDS, who was sent to prison for one month, and to pay the costs, or fourteen days' further. For the assault on SIMPSON the case against DODDS was dismissed, and the other four prisoners were each sent to prison for one month, and to pay the costs, or fourteen days further, the sentences to be consecutive".
