Record Source: a newspaper report said "the dead body of a young man, afterwards identified as that of George Frederick GOUNDRY, was found in the river Rother, at Chesterfield. The deceased was 21 years of age, and was the son of Mr. G.N. GOUNDRY, of the firm of Messrs. GOUNDRY and GILL, Grocers, of Mary's Gate, whose creditors were called together last week. He had been missing since Saturday. At an inquest held the same night a verdict of "Found drowned" was returned. It is supposed that he wandered down to the river side and accidentally fell in". He was described as being a Clerk at the Wagon Works, and of a very quiet disposition. His father said his son was normally teetotal, but other witnesses described him drinking with friends in several public houses on the evening he disappeared, and one said that he had not been sober when he last saw him. The Coroner cautioned two witnesses against filling in their spare time in such a manner as was shown in the evidence. George was unmarried.
