Record Source: a newspaper reported an inquest on a Miner who was killed in a pit accident at Ferryhill No. 3 Pit when he was crushed by a stone weighing over a hundredweight - it was stated that after a shot had been fired a prop next to the coal face had been knocked out. The Deputy Overman, George GOUNDRY, of Westcott Terrace, Dean Bank, Ferryhill, said that after the prop came out he tested the roof by jowling to ensure that it was safe. He then instructed the deceased to fill the loose coals, as it was not possible to put in another roof prop until they had been removed. The man was clearing away loose coal so that the prop could be replaced when a large stone from the roof came down and pinned him in a crouching position. A verdict of "Death from misadventure" was recorded.
