Martin, Jr., at the Clerk of Courts office in Amite Last week were, left to right: Mayor Earle Cefalu, Malone Williams, Clerk of Court Norman P. Vernon, Secretary of State, Wade O. Martin, Registrar of Voters Nic Navarra, and Assistant District Attorney Grover Covington. The voting machines will be used on a state-wide basis in the coming July elections. The one pictured above is on display in the Clerk of Courts office in Amite and may be tried and inspected by interested persons. (March 1954) (5104f)

COVINGTON, GROVER LEE
Died Sunday, April 16, 1995, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was
a native of Kentwood and a resident of Hammond. He was Chief Judge of Court
of Appeal, First Circuit; formerly Judge 21st Judicial District. special
assistant attorney general, assistant district attorney, municipal attorney
for Kentwood, Tangipahoa and Roseland, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War
II. Visiting was held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, 6 to 9
p.m. Monday, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home 8
to 10:40 a.m. Tuesday. Religious services at First United Methodist Church,
Hammond, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Charles Humphreys.
Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood. Survived by wife, Beverly Burns
Covington, Hammond; a son, Gregory Covington, Oakland, Calif.; four
daughters, Mrs. James (Lisa) Kennedy, Amite, Mrs. JohnK (Michelle) Wright
V, Carlisle Burracks, Pa., Marci Covington, Carlisle Burracks; a stepson,
Chad Turner, Atlanta; two brothers, Henry Brown and Leslie Covington; and
eight grandchildren. He was a life member of the American Legion, attended
University of North Carolina and Cornell, with special naval courses at
Harvard, received batchelor and law degrees from Tulane, was a member of
First United Methodist Church, Hammond, and various civic, service,
professional and fraternal organizations, including Hammond Rotary Club
(Paul Harris Fellow), Louisiana Judiciary Commisison and former chairman,
former cubmaster, Boy Scouts of America, charter member and past president
Tangipahoa Parish Chamber of Commerce, past president of Kentwood Chamber
of Commerce and Kentwood Rotary Club, Mason, member of Spring Creek Lodge
No. 184 and Triumph Lodge No. 422, F&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies No. 33
IGH, the York Rite Bodies Red Cross of Constantine, Jerusalem Temple, Al
Azar Grotto, honorary life member, Legion of Honor, Order of DeMolay for
Boys, former member board of directors, Masonic Home for Children and board
of trustees of the Masonic Home Educational 'Foundation, and was past grand
master of Masons in Louisiana in 1971. Honorary pallbearers are Alon L.
Wall, James D. Johnson Jr., Stanley P. Lemoine, active and retired Judges
of the Court of Appeal, First Circuit, and Judges and member of the Bar of
the 20th, 21st and 22nd Judicial Districts, officers of the Grand Lodge of
the state of Louisiana and all past grand masters Free and Accepted Masons.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic
High School, First United Methodist Church, Hammond, or to a charity of
choice.
