    Record Source: Long, Obstinate, and Bloody: The Battle of Guilford Courthouse, Babits and Howard. (2009). Long, Obstinate, and Bloody, The above contradicts many of the sources I have seen (including the Nat'l Park Services own records, based on incorrect information from the Sons (and Daughters) of the American Revolution that is cited often on other ancestry pages) that report Jack was a private. I have seen John listed in historical research as both a subaltern (a broad category meaning, roughly, junior officer below the rank of Captain -- such as cornet (cavalry) or ensign (infantry), and specifically as an ensign. Regardless, he was an officer, not a private.
