Record Source: an inquest was held into the death of John TURNBULL, 28, who was killed in Byers Green Colliery by a large stone falling upon him. John BRANNAN, a Coal Hewer, said he had been working with the deceased, and at about 10 am. had gone from where he had been sitting working and went a short distance away, when almost immediately a large stone came down and completely covered the deceased up. Some pieces of stone struck me on the back, but I was no worse. I spoke to the deceased but got no answer, I took my lamp and saw that he was under the stone. I got assistance and after about an hour and a half we got the stone off him, it was blue stone, and was about six feet long, a yard and a half broad, and about a yard in thickness. The deputy was at work at about four o'clock that morning, and he timbered the place well up. There was no carelessness either on my part or that of the deceased. The roof is a level one, but I observed a breaker in it, the stone had come away from the roof at the breaker. The deputy said it was a dangerous stone, and cautioned us to look at it. Jacob GOUNDRY, Deputy Overman at Byers Green Colliery, said he had examined the stone some time previous to it falling on to the deceased, and to having timbered it well up, and cautioned the deceased and BRANNAN to look after it. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death".

She had been seen to break the house windows, to put the complainant through the broken glass, and then make off with bedding, provisions, and anything the girl could lay hands on. P.C. SHARP said Mrs GOUNDRY was a disgraceful character, and the summons was now dismissed, Mrs GOUNDRY having been put out of court for disrespect to the Bench".
