Record Source: Bishop Auckland Court, "Elizabeth (sic - probably Tabitha) GOUNDRY, a young girl, charged her brother Jacob with assaulting her at Byers Green. The father, supported by defendant and a younger brother, complained indignantly to the Bench that his wife, with whom he was not living, was both dissipated and unfaithful. She had been seen to break the house windows, to put the complainant through the broken glass, and then make off with bedding, provisions, and anything the girl could lay hands on. P.C. SHARP said Mrs GOUNDRY was a disgraceful character, and the summons was now dismissed, Mrs GOUNDRY having been put out of court for disrespect to the Bench".

Record Source: at Durham County Police Court he was charged with having been drunk and disorderly at Low Spennymoor and with assaulting a Policeman. P.C. PARKER gave evidence that he was on duty there "when his attention was attracted to a disturbance going on in Post Office Street". The Constable found GOUNDRY and two other men, who were all drunk, creating a disturbance, and wanting to fight with one another. Some friends managed to get one of the men away, but the other two, including GOUNDRY, remained talking. As they were causing a disturbance the Constable told them several times to go away but they would not. GOUNDRY replied that "they would not go for a fat-headed old ---- like him". As GOUNDRY still refused to go away the Constable took him into custody. On the way to the Station-house he struck the officer in the chest and kicked him in the leg. P.C. PARKER bore out the opening statement, adding that he felt the blows for several days afterwrds. A witness said he heard the Policeman say "I'll teach him to call me a thick-headed b-----" and saw him go up and strike defendant either in the neck or side of the face. In fact the Policeman very nearly knocked him down in rushing at defendant". GOUNDRY was fined 5s. for being drunk and disorderly, and 10s. for the assault on the Policeman, both plus costs. He appeared in the Court again the same day - he and and Joseph STEEL were charged with having stolen two ferrets, the property of John KINGHORN, at Low Spennymoor - as STEEL did not appear in Court the case was adjourned for a fortnight.

Event Date: 3 OCT 1894
Record Source: at Durham County Police Court "Jacob GOUNDRY was charged with having, between the 1st and 2nd Sept., stolen two ferrets, of the value of £1, at Tudhoe. A man named Jos. STEEL was also concerned in the case, but it was stated that the man had since absconded". John KINGHORN stated that "he locked the ferrets up on the 1st Sept., but on the 2nd they were gone. GOUNDRY, while in company with STEEL, came to him and offered him a sovereign to make it up. Cross-examined: He never lost any ferrets while out either ratting or rabbitting. Mr. STARK stated that he had bought two ferrets off GOUNDRY for "five bob" on the Monday. Prosecutor had been to him to buy a ferret, and he thought he recognised one as belonging to him. Prosecutor then said to witness if it was his it would come to him. Prosecutor then called the ferret "Toby !, Toby !" but it ran the other way. One of the ferrets witness bought from GOUNDRY he had sold again. Mr. SIMPSON said he bought a ferret from the last witness, and on the following day Mr. KINGHORN came and claimed the ferret as his property. P.C. PARKER gave evidence as to being informed of the theft, and his endeavours to trace the ferrets. GOUNDRY was fined £2, inclusive of costs".
