At some time during this period he was presented with a sword (now held by Robert GOUNDRY's brother) by the Captain of an American ship in recognition of the good job he did in selling it and its contents after it broke up on Redcar rocks. He is also believed to have been involved in construction of an iron ore railway from Battersby to Rosedale, now part of the Lyke Wake Walk.
