It was said that fifteen years ago, he was minister of a Congregational Church at Portsea, but contracted habits of intemperance and had to give up the charge. After leaving Portsea he was appointed to a chapel in London with an income of £400 a year, and was subsequently at Walthamstow in a similar position for two years. He then took a boarding-house at Southsea, then moved to Campbell Road, Southsea. Early in March he had sold their home and went to Newcastle with the Servant. During the last year he must have had £300 at least, of which the wife and her daughter had not received a penny. He was also a Sub-superintendant of an Assurance Company, a position which might have been worth £700 a year; but the defendant did not trouble about the work. The witness and her eldest daughter tried to earn their living as Dressmakers, but were now penniless.

He had intended to get work there, but he had no technical knowledge and his only training was for the Church. He was said to be living at 98 Malcolm Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The Bench made an order for payment of arrears and costs, amounting to £14 11s., or fourteen days' imprisonment. GOUNDRY said he had no money or goods, so he was sent to gaol

Record Source: at Portsmouth Police Court he applied to have the maintenance order reduced to 5s. a week. He "denied that drink was the cause of his leaving the ministry - domestic unhappiness and his own failing health were the cause. He had not had any work since May, 1836". He claimed he had only taken £17-15s. to Newcastle, and this had all been spent and his sister was now supporting him, his two children and a 26 year-old Housekeeper. The Chairman of the Bench said "there would have to be a change in the Housekeeper business and other matters", and ordered him to pay 10s. a week.
