Event Date: 11 JUL 1910
Record Source: the owner of the Swiss Laundry, Cherryhinton, was summoned for allowing a laundry chimney to send forth black smoke. It was stated that there had been complaints about it since 1903. The company had installed a new boiler and agreed to use Welsh coal to mitigate the smoke. An Inspector of Nuisances had visited the premises and a formal notice to abate the nuisance within 10 days had been served but the smoke continued. It was stated that houses and gardens in the neighbourhood were almost uninhabitable when the wind was in a certain quarter. It was impossible to hang clothes out to dry - on one occasion a tablecloth was washed three times, and had eventually to be sent to the Laundry to be washed. The fruit in the garden got covered with black smuts, and those who worked there looked like sweeps. GOUNDRY, the defendant's Manager said that Welsh coal had been used and there was no black smoke on the days in question. The Bench made an order that the nuisance be immediately and entirely abated, and also prohibited its recurrence. They fined the defendant £1, plus 10 guineas costs.
