Record Source: an inquest at Durham was told that he had died when his grandmother left a pail of boiling water on the floor while she went to fetch cold water. The child stepped into the pail and was severely scalded. The Coroner remarked that "unfortunately it was the inveterate habit of some women to fill pails with hot water instead of first pouring in cold. In that case the child's life had been wasted through carelessness". A verdict of Accidental death was returned.
