Event Date: 29 SEP 1939
Event Place: the Post Office, Daddry Shield, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham
Record Source: a small hamlet in Weardale, Co. Durham. He was living with his brother John Geoffrey, two women named RODDAM, one of whom was the Shop Keeper and General Dealer, and a married couple named EMERSON. The children had been evacuated from their home in Sunderland. According to the family, the brothers' sister Joyce was also evacuated to Daddry Shield and was living over the road from her brothers and whoever she was billeted with used to lift her up to wave out of the window at them across the road. The evacuation of civilians in Britain during the Second World War was designed to protect civilians in Britain, particularly children, from the risks associated with aerial bombing of cities by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. Operation Pied Piper, which began on 1 September 1939, officially relocated more than 3.5 million people. By coincidence, in 1969, J.H.S. GOUNDRY and his wife Mildred moved into a house opposite the same Post Office.
