Record Source: a newspaper reported that there had been storm flooding in Sunderland with 1.18 inches of rain falling in an hour. Torrents of water poured down the streets, tearing up road surfaces in places and flooding drains and sewers so that water spurted out of the manholes like fountains. It reported a "Thornley Man's Exciting Experience" when a house in Queen Street, Thornley, occupied by Mr L. GOUNDRY was struck by lightning. Chimney pots were knocked off and part of the chimney stack fell down. A bedroom wall was cracked and a wireless set damaged. Mr GOUNDRY and his wife were away at Redcar, and Mrs GOUNDRY's brother, John DENT, was the only person in the house at the time. "There was a loud noise as the lightning struck the chimney," he said, "and then there seemed to be a blue flash in the fireplace as if it had come down the chimney". He was so smothered with dirt that he had to go to the pit-head baths for a bath.
