Record Source: at Durham Borough Police Court, a young man named George SIMMONS was charged with stealing a lever watch, value £6-10s-0d., the property of Matthew GOUNDRY, a Miner of Waldridge Fell. The men had met at a public-house in Framwellgate and at closing time SIMMONS had agreed to find GOUNDRY lodgings. After walking some distance GOUNDRY took his watch out to look at the time, and SIMMONS snatched it from him, knocked him down and ran off. He was apprehended the next day but the watch was not found. SIMMONS was committed for trial at the sessions

Record Source: at Chester-le-Street Petty Sessions, Matthew GOUNDRY was charged with unlawfully wounding his wife, Mary GOUNDRY. From the evidence of the woman, "who appeared in court in a very feeble condition, she had been most unmercifully kicked and beaten by the prisoner, and for several days had lain in a critical state. Dr. DUNCAN said he had found that three ribs had been broken, which had pierced the lungs. Air was escaping from the right lung, the vicinity of which was discoloured and badly bruised. Her face and head were also covered with bruises, which extended down the neck. At that time he did not consider her recovery at all a likely matter". GOUNDRY was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour in Durham Gaol, with an additional month for non-payment of costs.
