Record Source: at Houghton-le-Spring Police Court, Charles McVAY was charged with committing an assault upon Nicholas GOUNDRY - "The complainant stated that on the night in question he was in a public-house in Houghton-le-Spring, when the defendant entered with some other men, who became extremely violent. The complainant, who was assisting the landlord in waiting, requested the defendant and his companions to keep quiet. This appeared to give them offence, and on the complainant going outside they attacked him in a most disgraceful manner striking him on the head with a life preserver. The chairman stated that it was a most disgraceful case, and they would send the defendant to prison without the option of a fine. He was accordingly sent to the House of Correction for two months, with hard labour"
