Info from Family and Don Bennett's book: Marriage date from Sandy Point marriage records and married At St.Stephen's Anglican Church, Sandy Poin t by Reverend William Meek fromEngland and in Amelia's mind at least, this mar riage would not becomplete until such time as her own Catholic priest sanction ed theunion. The first such priest for Bay St. George, the Reverend AlexisBe langer, from Quebec, arrived on Sandy Point September 7, 1850. Philip's ances tors were English and Irish. Philip and Amelia had all their children baptized by her Catholicpriest, Reverend Alexis Belanger. Philip struggled with this f or manyyears, finally decided to convert to Amelia's religion. His daughterS arah Jane, taught him his catechism, and on June 3, 1877, at age 57,he receive d conditional baptism from Reverend Thomas Sears. SisterMargaret Mary, a great granddaughter, recalled being told thatPhilip, as a penance for making Amelia wait so long, would go out andchop wood. Philip and Amelia lived in Sandy Po int for a while, then moved overto Port au Port. In the spring and summer Phi lip fished for salmon, cod and herring. At the end of the fishing season, like others in the bay, he wouldsail to Halifax for the winter's supply of food an d clothing. In thefall and winter he would go into the county trapping and hu nting. Itwas said that he was the legendary trapper of Hind's Plain. In late ryears he would take his grandsons, Martin and Columbia, down to TwoGuts spea ring eels and out to Shoal Point shooting sea birds. Hewould only take a piec e of pork for his lunch. He expected them tocatch what they would eat. He wo uld not drink tea but would boil upsome kind of drink made from spruce bark. Philip and Amelia lived on a piece of land next to the Abbott &Haliburton Store. They owned an old style house.
