    [1] Rachel Seaman Wright, Obituary
[2] Mrs. Rachel Wright, one of the oldest residents of this city, died Aug 6, 1851, at the residence of Geo. G. Wright, Esq. She was born in New Jersey, July 17, 1784, just after the termination of the revolutionary war at a time when our country was in its youth and the simplicity of manners, honesty, and probity of its first settlers was a proverb every where.

At a very early age she, with her parents, removed to Penn., where she was married At The Age Of Seventeen To John Wright. Soon after her marriage she removed to Washington county, Penn., whilst the country was comparitively wild; and the only communication between the eastern and western portions of the State was by horses and waggons over a very rough mountain road.

In 1819 she removed to Indiana, which was then a western wilderness. About this time, REv. James Armstrong was drawing thousands after his ministry, and taking hundreds into the church. Mingled curiosity and prejudice led her husband to go to hear Armstrong, who was then preaching just a few doors from their dwelling. The first sermon left a powerful impression upon his mind, and during the progress of the the meeting he was converted; and he together with his wife, the subject of this notice became members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Some three years after this, the most important event of her life, she was called .....................................................and departure of her husband, who died June 28th, 1825.

Struggling with adversity, with an abiding trust in God, she felt keenly this most severe of all earthly losses, and strove to bring up her children in the nuture and admonition of the Lord.

When several of her children removed to this State, she came with them, when this country was yet new and the voice of the savage was yet heard in the valley of the Des Moines.

She was taken sick some two weeks before her death, her disease was severe and her sufferings hreat. She lost the use of her speech some five or six days before her death. The last words she spoke leave a clear indication of her past life and future abode. As she parted with her daughter-in-law, she remarked to her, "Tell mother Hight to meet me in heaven. When I was in health I had doubts; but now my way is bright as noon." She was naturally a woman of strong and vigorous mind, and was singularly endowed with a practical common sense enjoyed by but few.

As a woman of piety, there were no associations among her sex, or positions in life, in which her religion was not manifest; and in which her example was not .......................................... united with a womanly modesty a noble firmness. But her virtues, were adorned by a christian humility and Godly simpliciety and sincerity. Although she triumphed over early adversity and had lived to see all her family occupy a highly respectable position in society, and some of them filling the most respectable stations in public life, she was still the same humble christian. "She was humbe.. and is now exhalted."

She raised a large family who sincerely lament her death. She had eight living children; among them whom is Hon. Jos. A. Wright, Governor of Indiana, and thirty-three grand children. She had followed a husband, a child, and grand children to the grave; with a womanly fortitude, had to see ................. .................... and in the full... .......................................................................
old; she has also gone the way of all the earth. She now rests in the bosom of Abraham, awaiting the coming of our Loard Jesus Christ.
