    Event Date: 7 FEB 1848
Record Source: at an unknown Court Ralph SCURFIELD, a Pitman, was charged with having stolen several articles of wearing apparel and other goods, the property of Ralph GOUNDRY of the same place. It was stated that the prosecutor, as he was unwell, had gone to bed about 8 pm. leaving his wife sitting by the fire. "He slept until about two o'clock when he awoke and found his wife was not in the house. He went to bed again, and about eight o'clock in the morning, finding she was still absent, he went into the village to make enquiries but could obtain no intelligence. Having before heard some rumours of an improper connection between the prisoner and his wife, he suspected she had gone off with him, and on searching his house he found a quantity of goods missing. It appeared that the prisoner and GOUNDRY's wife had gone off together, for about three o'clock on Saturday morning, as P.C. HODGSON was on duty, in Priestgate, Darlington, he met a man and woman, carrying a large sack, and on his putting some questions to them which were not satisfactorily answered he took them to the station-house. Amongst other articles he found a prayer book, in which was written the name of the prosecutor, Ralph GOUNDRY, Coundon. The prisoner had given his name as Ralph HUMBLE. The officer brought the parties to Bishop Auckland, and the foregoing statement having been substantiated, the prisoner SCURFIELD was committed for trial, and GOUNDRY's wife ordered to be discharged".

    Genealogy Event 5
    Event Type: Custom Event
    Event Date: 27 MAR 1848
Record Source: a newspaper reported that Ralph SCURFIELD, aged 21, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment "for having, at St. Andrew Auckland, stolen a quantity of wearing apparel and other articles, the property of Ralph GOUNDRY". Another newspaper reported that the sentence was "three months' hard labour in the house of correction, except the last fortnight in solitary confinement". It was stated that "the prosecutor and prisoner are both Pitmen at Coundon, the latter lodging with the former. Suspicion arising in the mind of the prosecutor that the prisoner was on too familiar terms with his wife, he was consequently turned out of the house. On the night in question, the prosecutor went to bed at 8 o'clock, leaving his wife sitting by the kitchen fire, and on awakening, about 2 o'clock next morning, he missed his wife from bed. He again went to sleep till 8 o'clock, when he rose, and found that both wife and goods had disappeared. Between 2 and 3 o'clock that morning, the prisoner and prosecutor's wife were taken up by the police in the streets of Darlington, the prisoner having a large sack on his back, which was found to contain the property of the prosecutor, to the weight of four stones. Mr GREY, for the prisoner, contended that it was a regular matter of elopement between the prosecutor's wife and the prisoner; and that the latter had only acted, in removing the goods, under the impression that they belonged to the woman". Although not stated in Court it is probable that the defendant was related to Ralph's mother as they had the same surname. Three years later Ralph had re-married bigamously and his ex-wife was living with the defendant
