CHURCHCEMETERY HISTORY:
------------------------
Much of the records of Long Creek Baptist Church have been lost with the passing of time; however, it is known that the church was organized in 1828 as Specoah Church with 15 charter members. The building was located down on the side of the hill nearer the spring on land purchased or deeded by or from Jerry Roach. John Maxwell, Jonas Phillips, Col. J. J. Norton, and Thomas R. Holbrooks are also connected with the property of this church. At that time, it was in the
Mountain Association, of which little is now known.
The first "meeting house" was a log structure. Inside, arranged facing the
fireplace, were split log benches, put together with pegs. In 1830 the name was
changed to "The Baptist Church of Christ of Long Creek."
The next preserved records are from 1880, when L. D. Chambers was supply pastor, and P. Moore was the alternate. J. T. Phillips was clerk.
In 1884, David Ramey was licensed to the ministry, the first on church records.
In January 1889, a frame building was erected, and unfortunately, burned in June
of the same year. The cost of the building was $200. In 1890, the church was
rebuilt.
In 1903, J. G. Lee was ordained as deacon. The church withdrew, in 1908, from Mountain Association, and joined Beaverdam Association. The church first participated in Home Mission efforts in 1912, and in Foreign Missions in 1914.
Another dedicated pastor was W. H. Blackwell, 1931-1942, who
Some early families who were members of the church were: Moores, Blackwells, Chambers, Roaches, Phillips, Rameys, and Lees.
