    Record Source: Robert was involved in a disaster at Tudhoe Colliery, which claimed the lives of 37 men and boys. At an inquest held on 22-24 May it was stated that, as Night Shift Deputy, he had carried out an inspection prior to the accident and found no trace of gas. The Colliery Manager said he believed there had been a fall of stone from the roof, which had released some gas, which had then been ignited by a lamp, and the resultant explosion had swept through most of the Colliery. The inquest concluded that the deaths were accidental.
